It's Lent again, when I do stuff I've been putting off.
I'm starting small.

Happy Ides of March!
And also, Dan Luten's Brithday.
I decided to mark the day by trying out the bar & grill that just opened in Hallidie Plaza. The kitchen seems to be doing ok, but the counter staff do not yet have the hang of the registers.

Eternal vigilance, or, someone should hire some proofreaders
The USITC posted fourteen changes today, and five of those changes have conspicuous errors. There may be more mistakes that I just haven't found yet.

Nesting
This weekend, I got almost all my paper tucked into discreet little black boxes that fit neatly into the fronts of the window seats. And it is good.
But I keep thinking up more stuff to want. It's not good.

Saving Grace
The new season permiered tonight. I've gotten to like the show, despite TNT's lousy advertising. (Seriously, when the ads run in the middle of the show, I change the channel, they're so bad.) Anyway - what I like are the little things, like the collection jar perched on a counter near the office door. It wasn't mentioned in the dialogue at all. The characters talked about the guy for whom the collection was being taken, and they slipped cash into the jar in passing, but the scriptwriters restrained themselves from having the characters explain it to the dim-witted in the audience. I like that.

That's much better.
I'm not all that enthused about Obama - he's said some things, and voted for some stuff, that I am still way not happy about - but OMG I am SO INCREDIBLY cap-locking HAPPY that he won, in a landslide, sweeping Democrats into office behind him all over the place. Maybe we can start inching back away from the Pit now.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed about Prop 8.
eta: I am totally enthused about Michelle Obama as First Lady. Damn, but that woman has poise. Plus the whole smart & accomplished thing. She's going to be great.

School Pictures
Pictures of the Tiger, looking adorable, arrived in the mail today. Someone seems to have given him a dinosaur-skeleton stamp, which is also darn cute.

Another Pleasant Valley Sunday
Lazed late. Hung about. The guys went canoeing. After lunch we bundled everyone into the car and drove to Princeton, where we had dinner with Aunt C. She seems tired. Tiger displayed his expanding knowledge of the Roman alphabet and cardinal numbers. We drove into the city and have arrived. K has just offered me a cookie, and so I must go.

Eternal vigilance
Today was much better. We made a list of things that I'll have to do later because there isn't time this go-round. Which bodes ill for next week, but makes this week less awful. Plus another editor turned up. No one knew he was coming in today. He'd barely sat down before *poof* I appeared at his desk with an armload of work. I am the Bad Fairy in this scenario.
Even with the shortened checklist and the extra pair of hands, I'll have to work Saturday.

Dinner with a Spanish Mathematician
Consulted reference material (via Pep's blackberry iPhone) in re the relative ages of Stonehenge and the pyramids at Giza. Turns out they are roughly contemporaneous. There was talk of the Easter Island stone dudes, but, as they cannot be easily constructed of shipping boxes, they were of less interest.

Been feeling out of sorts lately
so I went looking for an external cause. Maybe Mercury in retrograde? No such luck. Uranus is in retrograde, but Uranus spends half of every year in retrograde.
Mars goes retrograde on the 15th. Beware of indigestion, y'all. And "political leaders should also avoid becoming unduly concerned with homeland security and avoid imposing needless restrictions." Who says astrology isn't relevant to everyday concerns?

Free hand
Today's highlight was discussing my former boss's wedding present with my current boss. I proposed shopping from the registry. She preferred the gift of protein, in mail-order barbecue format. The more we talked, the more adamant she became. I acquiesced, then suggested adding a bottle of champagne for celebratory tone. When we parted, we each had our super-secret spy assignments. She is to find out his first choice of mail-order rib-joints, and I am to take up the collection.
