3-2-1

Three boxes of books up from the basement: two of paperback fiction, Francis-Innes and Innes-King; one of sociology & linguistics, including a dictionary, a thesaurus, and JC Cooper's Illustrated Encyclopedia of Traditional Symbols. The place feels much homier.

Two new books acquired on the way home: Terry Pratchett's just-out Unseen Academicals, and Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower. I had a lovely chat with the bookstore clerk, in which I advised her to read Butler's Bloodchild,* but not if she had any other heavy emotional stuff going on that month.

One Christmas card from S&T in beautiful Hawaii. My first at the new address! Love you guys. :)

*I realized much later that I'd meant Kindred. Bloodchild is mindblowing in its way, but nowhere near as heavy as Kindred.

Helpful tip

The Cal Marching Band played at medium volume drowns out a grackle-voiced coworker more effectively than AC/DC played at high volume.

Brunchiness

Today's meeting the the Thanksgiving Planning Committee was quite productive: we almost finished the crossword, and I palmed off a stack of serving dishes on M. Then I got a haircut and did my laundry.

Later, I found a video that I saw once in 1983 and has haunted me since: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5Ac_OBeGWs&feature=related
Um. Yeah.

Babes in the woods

Pep, I need more information about this picture of your family tree. If hand-drawn, it'd fall in 4906 (PLANS AND DRAWINGS FOR ARCHITECTURAL, ENGINEERING, INDUSTRIAL, COMMERCIAL, TOPOGRAPHICAL OR SIMILAR PURPOSES, BEING ORIGINALS DRAWN BY HAND; HAND-WRITTEN TEXTS; PHOTOGRAPHIC REPRODUCTIONS ON SENSITISED PAPER AND CARBON COPIES OF THE FOREGOING); if otherwise printed, it'd fall in 4911 (OTHER PRINTED MATTER, INCLUDING PRINTED PICTURES AND PHOTOGRAPHS). But in either case, if it's over 100 years old, it'd go in 9706 (ANTIQUES OF AN AGE EXCEEDING ONE HUNDRED YEARS).
