Light-filled rooms
Gave T&S and AL&CC the tour. They seemed approving. The Angry Lemming agreed to set up my wireless thingamabob - score! Then T&S gave us lunch, which was most sweet of them. CC had brought me some boxes, so they dropped me home.
Thanks, everybody!
Then I did the chore I've been putting off: paper sorting. I tossed pay stubs dating back to the early '90s and a whole lot of Christmas cards. Three bagsful of paper went down the chute. Found amid the mass: an address for cousin Cynthia and a letter from her mother acknowleging that chair is rightfully mine. Now I just need to write C and ask for it.

France has won!
July 3rd, 2006, I was at the meat counter at Whole Foods and realized that Hubert Keller(!) was standing next to me. He caught me gawping at him. I told him he was wonderful on camera. He thanked me and went back to choosing sausages. Such a gracious man.
I'm glad he won the first round.

If at first you don't succeed
Left work just before seven and, as there wasn't a whole lot of edible food in the house, decided to go to the store. I got on the cable car at Sansome. At Montgomery we were passed by a fire truck. Then we came to a halt d/t the cable car stopped on the far side of Kearney. According to the brakeman's walkie talkie, it was a bad accident at Grant, with traffic stopped in both directions. I looked uphill and saw a lot of flashing lights.
"I think I'll catch a bus," I said.
"Aw, giving up so soon?" said the brakeman.
"What can I say? I'm a quitter like that," I replied.
I walked up to Sacramento and waited. A jam-packed bus blew by. A few drops of rain fell. I sighed petulantly and hailed a cab.
"California and Hyde," I told the cabbie, "but there's an accident on California..."

Comfortable Eclipse Viewing
Stopped at the Top of the Mark, had a drink, checked out the shadow of the earth upon the moon. Highly cool. The Moon passed behind a building. I ordered the cheese plate. The moon - what was left of it - came out from behind the building. I ordered another drink. The moon disappeared completely. Kind of neat in a system-mechanics-in-action sort of way, but I was promised color effects that didn't materialize. I blame the high clouds. I finished my drink, and when the moon still hadn't returned, I called for the check and went home.
The Top of the Mark afforded excellent conditions for eclipse viewing. Comfortable, good service, a fine (if unexceptional) cheese plate, fantastic view. I strongly recommend it for all your astronomical observation needs.
