Brunch with T (no S)

Hope you're feeling better, S.

After, CC & went to Home Depot and found a light fixture for the top of my bookcase. I am very glad she was there.

New movie challenge

Name a movie where the protagonist is an adult woman, and she ends up

1. Alive and healthy
2. Happy
3. Not in love

I think I've got one that fits this and passes the Bechdel test.

This "Holiday" thing is most excellent

M, K, and Tiger came to collect me this morning. The drive to M's was gorgeous - patchy clouds up high, but sea level was so clear we could see one bridge from the other. Sparkly.

After CC & AL arrived, we opened stockings while S fried bacon, and then eggs, and the bread pudding was served. In my stocking I got some candy bars, a Tiger magnet, yummy jam, an Edward Gorey double feature, and 2 (two!) coffee cozies. Santa knows what I like. Tiger got quite a lot of presents, mainly books and trucks, and also a spiky green indoor-throwable ball. He seemed pleased.

Then we cracked open the puzzle and I stared at it for the next six hours or so. While I was doing that, we inhaled cheese, played several rounds of Scrabble and backgammon, started writing a chapter book, ate a fudge dinosaur, and other (more energetic) people also made excursions Totland and later to the Little Farm. S built a fire. As the puzzle was still not finished, we dined in the living room. The entertainment highlight was a vignette entitled "Tiger in Space" that featured a demostration of the Robot Arm.

After dinner M pinned a dress for me, and AL & CC brought me home again, because they're sweet. I got home to a message from the Wandering Albatross, saying he's in VA... too late to call back. I finally opened my gift from b2: demi-glace de veau and a nice chardonay.

:)

The morning radio people were talking about how very auspicious a day it is, what with all those eights. And they were right; today I discovered Cake Wrecks, and the world is a better place.

I sank my fingers in the soil

Today we went to the farm, and I finally met the mythic Farmer Dave. He is most tall. First we set watermelon seeds in trays, then K went outside and hoed at thistles while Tiger and I moved dirt around in the big bin in the greenhouse. We planted imaginary orange roses. Later we met red chickens, black chickens, three-day-old chicks, four bunnies, and a number of tractors, some with incomprehensible attachments.

On the way home K dropped off some paperwork at the local day-care center. Tiger and I stayed in the car. I took the opportunity to read him TS Eliot's "The Naming of Cats." I don't think he really understood the poem. Eliot has that effect on lots of people.

Swinishness

A word sadly little-used, swinishness. Even spell check rejects it.
My morale was high. I needed a job, but that, which should have been a depressing factor when viewed in cold blood, in fact simply was not. Neither was the swinishness of my landlord, a Mr Alexander, short of stature. I was reluctant to go home lest he should waylay me. I owed him no rent but he kept insisting that I should take a larger and more expensive room in his house, seeing that I had overcrowded the small single room with my books, my papers, my boxes and bags, my food stores and the evidence of constant visitors who stayed to tea or came late.

So far I had stood up to the landlord’s claim that I was virtually living a double-room life for single-room pay. At the same time I was fascinated by his swinishness...

Return of the cooks

The squirrelly guy is annoying me.

I count seven New Yorkers, four San Franciscan, two each from Chicago and Atlanta, and one Angelena. No one's currently working in Vegas. hmmmm.

I predict trouble between the couple. The judges will like one of them better, and the other contestants will not be supportive. I do hope they come out the other side still wanting to be together.

Name that epic

Previously in Space Chantey, the war ended. Captain Roadstrum, along with the captains and crews of five Hornets, decide to make a brief stop on Lotophage before starting home for World. [creepy music] They stay rather longer than intended. [/creepy music] Only two Hornets lift off - the rest of the crews could not be roused from their stupor.

The neglected Hornets must set down for repairs. The only rock within range is Lamos of the Laestrygonians. The Laestrygonians might be a species of Groll's Trolls... but much larger. The Laestrygonians feast them well, then insist upon a battle to the death, interrupted only by a good lunch. Night falls as Roadstrum and Bjorn the head troll, the last survivors of the terrible fight, kill each other in a rousing duel. Valkyries carry the bodies of the warriors from the field. In the morning, the dead awaken, and sit down for another excellent feast.

Roadstrum and his men return to their Hornets to find that repairs had been effected by a young Laestrygonian during the previous day's battle. Roadstrum invites the repairman to travel with them, and off they go - but not until the Laestrygonians remove the World-men's tongues.

Tonight's episode: The Hornets enter a field of asteroids that bear a striking resemblance to golden cattle of the sun.

Overall, an excellent day

We rode steam trains through a cloud, then descended into the land of sunshine and brought lunch to the Peregrinators.

Tiger assisted M as she took superannuated fruit from its tree. Then he played trains while she scrubbed. The twins cleansed the kitchen, the guys cleansed the garage, and I got to unpack a lot of books from their boxes and arrange them on shelves. I feel I bagged the best job.

The neighbors brought food. Go, neighbors! The cat emerged from behind the bar to join the feast. He even let me scratch behind his ears. Hello, cat! Then M drove me home. Thanks, M!

Sleep well, everyone.
