Learning experiences
It looked like rain this morning. I don't have a pair of waterproof shoes that goes with my Easter Sunday dress, so I wore a different outfit (and the amber earrings to go with it) to mass at St. Patrick's. I learned that Catholic tourists do not sing at mass, even when encouraged by the priest.
After mass, I met the gang back at my place. They peer-pressured me into changing into warmer clothes (and tree earrings) and going with them to the Muir Woods, where it was raining. I learned that a) redwood groves stay relatively dry, and b) tourists will show up to see redwoods even in the pouring rain.
We lunched in Marin. Then we went to M's, where I napped for a while. K and I went grocery shopping. We noshed on leftover Chinese takeout while playing Apples to Apples. I learned that "the ocean" is more "stunning" than "charging rhinos." Still don't get that one.
M drove us back to my place. At D's insistence, we played Scrabble. S put "CARIBOU" across two double word scores for 96 points. I made a display of poor sportsmanship.
They're leaving first thing in the morning. pout.

The end is near
I actually believe I can have everything packed up by Monday morning... though I may come begging someone to do a charity schlep with me next week.
I keep forgetting to photograph the rejected furniture and post it on craigslist.
I spent the evening wrapping dishes in '89 newspaper, including classified ads.
Seems like those two tidbits juxtaposed should be significant, somehow.

Brush with B-52
I was on my way to the supermarket after work. Round about Kearney, I realized the tourist next to me getting all sticker-shocked about the fare had a very familiar voice. I glanced over, and went Fred! I didn't say that out loud. No, I said something inane about the mass-transit experience. He said he could get that on the subway. Seemed a fair point. We stopped at Grant, and a row of tourists formed, snapping shots of the cable car. He started laughing. "You don't get that on the subway," I said, He and his companion said, "Well..." I suppressed the urge to point out Coit Tower and the steeples of Sts Peter & Paul as we went by. I suppressed the urge to get all fangirly effusive at him - if he wanted effusion, he'd have been traveling differently. I did, however, keep sneaking peeks. And eavesdropping. They were on their way to Whole Foods and then meeting some people later. I suppressed the urge to tail them to Whole Foods, and got off at Cala like I'd planned.
OMG OMG OMG Fred!

So, that one place I was talking about
with the wall of glass brick facing the street? If I'm reading google right, the street in question is the alley behind Angry Lemming's office. And if I'm reading the property description right, the apartment has deeded parking.
But does that make up for the place being innundated if sea level rises more than 4 meters? And in a liquefaction zone? Probably not. Liquefaction + glass brick = unhappiness.

Bunny
1690, dim. of Scottish dialectal bun, pet name for "rabbit," previously (1587) for "squirrel," and also a term of endearment for a young attractive woman or child (1606). Ultimately could be from Scottish bun "tail of a hare" (1538), or from Fr. bon, or from a Scand. source. The Playboy Club hostess sense is from 1960. The Bunny Hug (1912), along with the foxtrot and the Wilson glide, were among the popular/scandalous dances of the ragtime era.

A-a-a-a-a-le-lu-u-jah
I attended Easter service at First Congregational. This was the first official service in the new building. (They'd been holding "one hour tours" of the sanctuary every Sunday morning while waiting for the use permit to come through.) A guy I ride the bus with was there. I finally got to meet his partner. We sang "Christ the Lord is Risen Today," which made me happy. At the end we sang the Hallelujah Chorus, which made me very happy.
After church I took the #1 bus out to the Legion of Honor. I admired the view, which is seriously admirable. Also toured the museum. Their permanent collection is on a par with the DeYoung's, except the Legion has Rodins instead of that fascinatingly awful fireplace.
Hoping you all had a lovely Vernal Festival.

Small earthquake this evening

Shook just hard enough to get me out of my chair and under a lintel. (I hear lintels are no longer recommended. Feh. What do they know?)

Hare & tortoise
A Hare jeered at a Tortoise for the slowness of his pace. But he laughed and said that he would run against her and beat her any day she would name. “Come on,” said the Hare; “you shall soon see what my feet are made of.” So it was agreed that they should start at once. The Tortoise went off jogging along, without a moment's stopping, at his usual steady pace. The Hare, treating the whole matter very lightly, said she would first take a little nap, and that she should soon overtake the Tortoise. Meanwhile the Tortoise plodded on, and the Hare oversleeping herself, arrived at the goal, only to see that the Tortoise had got in before her.- - Townsend & James
I'm wondering if the gendered pronouns in the above are a result of the Greek, or an editorial on the part of the translators.
