Spelling Bee!

Spelling Bee Dude said "ma-ook-a," and I was like, "huh?" until he said it meant "toward the mountains," at which point I was all, "oh, mauka." Then Spelling Bee Dude said it had no other pronunciations. And I'm all "What!?" Dad said it with two syllables. He even was a native-ish speaker, unlike Spelling Bee Dude. hmph.

The Day of the Superb Owl

M & I toured Ikea contrary-wise, and I came away with

- the velvet cushion I'm sitting on right now
- a spatter guard for my pots and pans
- an ice cream scoop
- wildlife cookie-cutters (some Russians tried to hijack them out of our cart while we were looking for a bundt pan, but gave them back as soon as M showed them where to find more)
- a shelflet for my bathroom cabinet
- an upper cabinet to fill the blank spot in my kitchen

Thanks, everybody! It was exactly what I wanted. :)

Bookcases

I want one that's 32" wide and eight feet tall, and one that's 8 feet long and about 40" high. I'm thinking about Ikea for the tall one. Or should I wait until I find a giant bookcase that's not disposable? Decisions, decisions.

More packing

I'm almost done with the books. After those are boxed, it's just the kichen, the bedroom closet, and a living room full of tchotchkes.

Oh, hey - does anyone want my old sleeping bag?

Let's Go To The Mall

Yet another group of good-hearted people humored me while I stared at the windows of an apartment I don't live in. Then we had dim sum, and they lent me a camera. (Thank you, good-hearted people!) At the mall, they bought clothes, I bought a magazine.

Warehouse 13

The first time I remember seeing this show, it was called "Friday the 13th - the Series." This version is better.

Nice day

A pleasant brunch, then M went with to an open house. Those bedrooms were tiny. Also, poor bathroom placement on one of the models. Locations's still good, though.

Then I went home.

Uncle John's Band

It's the same story the crow told me;
It's the only one he knows.
Like the morning sun you come and like the wind you go.
Ain't no time to hate, barely time to wait,
Woh - oh, what I want to know, where does the time go?

I live in a silver mine and I call it Beggar's Tomb;
I got me a violin and I beg you call the tune
Anybody's choice, I can hear your voice.
Woh - oh, what I want to know, how does the song go?

Come hear the Uncle John's Band by the riverside
Got some things to talk about, here beside the risin' tide
Come hear Uncle John's Band playing to the tide,
Come on along, or go alone,
He's come to take his children home.
Woh - oh, what I want to know, how does the song go?

Come hear Uncle John's Band by the riverside,
Got some things to talk about here beside the risin' tide.
Come hear Uncle John's Band playing to the tide, come on
Along or go alone, he's come to take his children home.

Clarity

This morning opened with a young woman delivering a dramatic monologue of her own composition, "How I Got My Second Strike," on the bus. Good sense of pace and organization. She skimped a bit on the illustrative detail, though, and combined with her deadpan line reading, the whole lacked punch.

This afternoon, I picked up my new glasses, and marvelled at being able to read storefronts across the street.
I can see for miles and miles...

Age of Aquarius Dawns!

At 11:35pm Pacific time, the moon was in the seventh house and Jupiter aligned with Mars. Now peace shall guide the planets and love will steer the stars. Isn't it great?

89 cents

Stopped at the store on the way home, and found they had avocados for 89 cents apiece. Decent sized, too. So for dinner tonight I cubed some bread, diced an avocado, and tossed them together with a little sausage and white wine reduction. mmmmmm.

Management in the office

They were talking about redoing the proprietary software. They say they mean it this time, which would be nice. I'm going to go on not holding my breath about it.

Motion toward

K & Tiger had a brunch date, and so left early for the city. S and I followed in the afternoon. Going to the station was like driving through a painting. In the evening we picnicked in the park on the hill. We spotted Tiger's friend C on his way home with his mother, and inveigled them into an impromptu play date. There was much running and kicking of the soccer ball. Then the sun set behind the trees, and we came home.
