Deep Thoughts

We were talking tonight about the fractal nature of Disneyland. How everywhere you look inside the park, there's always more to see. Was Walt a an experimental geometer? Inquiring minds want to know.

Seen today at the corner of Bush & Montgomery

A 12-year-old girl, carrying a bright paper parasol, with a six inch safety pin through her nose.
Yes, I did stare after her and giggle.

Clarity

This morning opened with a young woman delivering a dramatic monologue of her own composition, "How I Got My Second Strike," on the bus. Good sense of pace and organization. She skimped a bit on the illustrative detail, though, and combined with her deadpan line reading, the whole lacked punch.

This afternoon, I picked up my new glasses, and marvelled at being able to read storefronts across the street.
I can see for miles and miles...

Journey again

On the cable car tonight there were two women sitting outside, singing.

In harmony.

Would have been kind of fun if they weren't singing Journey.
Don't stop... belieevin'...

Work fun

Got an email from my boss, forwarded from a potential customer through Sales Dude, asking what info I had on Big Mess,* and how are the relevant footnotes set up in the production database? She was thinking of having IT extract the info from the footnotes, and wanted to know how much trouble the programmers were going to have.

I responded with a spreadsheet that has all the info that the customer was looking for about Big Mess in sortable, searchable format. The Sales Assistant stopped by my desk a little later, and I pruned it a bit for him, and told him the parts he'd have to trim himself because I didn't have time. Later that afternoon, I got a thank-you forward from Sales Dude; he'd sent a bonsai version of my spreadsheet along to the potential customer.

I looked spiffy-golden, so that was nice. But should I have told them about the two weeks I spent setting up that spreadsheet?

Sign of the times

I went to get a sandwich from my local Quizno's today, and found a sign on the door saying they were closed as of three weeks ago.

Darn it, I liked my local Quizno's.

On the radio this morning

There was a story about a woman who's been harvesting the trees in people's yards and passing the fruit on to the food bank. (Yes, she gets permission first.)

Eye Exam

That puff of air is startling, isn't it?

The eye doc was pleasant, very professional, and younger than me. She pronounced me officially nearsighted, and said I didn't need bifocals quite yet; my current glasses will do as reading glasses until my next exam. My new glasses - Now with DistanceVision! - should be ready in a few weeks.

New need

I've decided I need bread earrings. That way, I can make "bread and honey" (with the bees) or "bread and roses" (with the roses).

Sadly, everything google is showing me is too cutesy.

Eye Appointment

- Hello, [lengthy place-of business ID and greeting], how may I help you?
- - Hi, I'd like to schedule an eye exam. When can I come in?
- When would you like to come in?
- - When's the next available appointment?
- When would you like it to be?
- - Do you always answer a question with a question?
- Do you... um... Darn it.
- - I win! Hooray!
- I just couldn't get it turned around in time. *sigh* But really, when do you want to come in? I don't think we can see you today.
- - How's Tuesday?
Appointment-making nitty-gritty ensued.

It wasn't until he read back the date that I realized I'd chosen St. Patrick's Day to get my eyes checked.

3 is a Magic Number

Three is a magic number,
Yes it is, it's a magic number.
Somewhere in the ancient, mystic trinity
You get three as a magic number.

The past and the present and the future.
Faith and Hope and Charity,
The heart and the brain and the body
Give you three as a magic number.

It takes three legs to make a tri-pod
Or to make a table stand.
It takes three wheels to make a ve-hicle
Called a tricycle.

Every triangle has three corners,
Every triangle has three sides,
No more, no less.
You don't have to guess.
When it's three you can see
It's a magic number.

A man and a woman had a little baby,
Yes, they did.
They had three in the family,
And that's a magic number.

3-6-9, 12-15-18, 21-24-27, 30.
3-6-9, 12-15-18, 21-24-27, 30.

Forward Planning

Pi Day is on a Saturday this year. We should gather and consume pie.

There's an Author Guy Appearance in Petaluma at 7pm on Friday, March 27. We could do that. Or we could stick with the original plan of Capitola on a Wednesday. We should discuss this while consuming pie.

At the market

I wanted some Golden Delicious, but an old guy had his cart parked in front of them. I went and found myself a nice pepper. Came back to find him still standing there. I started looking over apples while edging his cart out of my way all subtle-like, and he pulled his cart back a few inches. About then I realized that he was still standing there because he was pulling bunches of plastic bags off the spinner and squirreling them away.

He said something about the price of apples being too high. I was in a good mood, so I said something about the Apple Pickers' Union doing well for themselves. "Too well," he snarled back. Uh-huh. I chose a pair of apples while he muttered about prices being too high, and as I walked away I heard him say something about how I don't know what a Depression is like.

I was all the way around to the cheese aisle (still humming Woody Guthrie) when it occurred to me that he probably didn't know what a Depression was like, either. That man didn't look a day over 70.
